The piece looks beautiful. The seller seems confident. The price feels reasonable. You buy it, wear it home, and feel good about the purchase.
And then, a few weeks later, your skin turns green where the bracelet sits. Or the piece darkens in a way that no amount of cleaning can reverse. Or you take it to another jeweller for sizing and are told, quietly and without drama, that what you are wearing is not silver.
This happens more often than most people realise. India’s silver jewellery market is vast, vibrant, and largely wonderful — but it is not without its share of imitation products sold as the real thing. The good news is that identifying fake silver is not as difficult as it might seem. With a few simple tests and a basic understanding of what to look for, you can protect yourself from buying something that is not what it claims to be.
Understanding What You Are Looking For
Genuine 925 sterling silver is 92.5% pure silver alloyed with copper. It has specific physical properties — weight, conductivity, magnetic behaviour, and appearance — that differ measurably from the metals most commonly used to imitate it.
Common imitations include silver-plated brass or copper, where a thin layer of silver is electroplated over a base metal that will eventually show through as the plating wears away. Nickel silver, also called German silver, contains no silver at all — it is an alloy of nickel, copper, and zinc that simply has a similar colour. Stainless steel with a silver finish is another substitute sometimes sold deceptively. Each of these materials behaves differently from genuine sterling silver, and those differences can be detected.
The Hallmark Test: Your First and Most Reliable Check
Before any other test, look for the hallmark.
Genuine 925 sterling silver sold in India should carry a BIS hallmark — the Bureau of Indian Standards certification that independently verifies purity. A complete BIS hallmark includes the BIS logo in the form of a triangle, the purity mark reading 925, the hallmarking centre’s identification code, and the year of certification.
Look for this mark on an inconspicuous part of the piece — the inside of a ring band, the clasp of a bracelet, the back of a pendant. Use a magnifying glass if necessary, as the stamps are small. The mark should be crisp and clear, not smudged or poorly defined.
If the piece carries only a generic stamp reading silver or 925 without the complete BIS certification elements, you have less assurance of authenticity. The stamp alone can be faked. BIS hallmarking, which involves independent third-party testing, is considerably harder to falsify.
The BIS Care app on your smartphone allows you to verify the Hallmark Unique Identification number — HUID — printed on genuinely hallmarked pieces directly against the BIS database. If a seller claims their piece is BIS hallmarked but cannot provide the HUID for verification, that is a significant warning sign.
The Magnet Test
Silver is not magnetic. Neither is copper, which is the metal alloyed with silver in genuine sterling silver. If you bring a strong magnet close to a piece of silver jewellery and feel a clear attraction, the piece almost certainly contains iron, steel, or another magnetic metal — none of which should be present in genuine sterling silver.
This test is easy to perform and requires nothing more than a reasonably strong magnet. A fridge magnet will not be powerful enough — use a neodymium magnet, which can be purchased inexpensively and is small enough to carry in a wallet.
A word of caution: passing the magnet test does not guarantee authenticity. Brass, copper, nickel silver, and several other non-silver metals are also non-magnetic. The magnet test eliminates some fakes but does not confirm genuine silver on its own.
The Oxidation Test
Genuine sterling silver tarnishes in a specific and characteristic way when exposed to oxidising agents. A simple home test involves applying a small amount of liquid bleach to an inconspicuous part of the piece using a cotton swab.
Real sterling silver will begin to darken almost immediately upon contact with bleach, because the sulphur compounds in bleach react with silver to form silver sulphide — the same compound responsible for natural tarnishing. Fake silver made from base metals will not react in the same way, or will react differently.
This test should be performed with care and only on a small, hidden area of the piece, as bleach can damage both genuine and fake silver if left on for too long. Rinse the area thoroughly with water immediately after observing the reaction.
The Ice Test
This is perhaps the most surprising test on this list, and one of the most reliable.
Silver has the highest thermal conductivity of any metal — higher than copper, higher than gold, higher than any common metal used to imitate it. This means that silver transfers heat and cold exceptionally efficiently.
Place a piece of ice on your silver jewellery. Genuine sterling silver will cause the ice to begin melting almost immediately, even if the jewellery itself is at room temperature, because the silver conducts the ambient heat of the room into the ice so efficiently. A piece made from brass, nickel silver, or other common imitation metals will cause the ice to melt noticeably more slowly.
This test requires no special equipment and leaves no marks on the jewellery. It is one of the cleanest and most accessible ways to get a quick sense of whether a piece might be genuine.
The Smell Test
Genuine sterling silver has almost no smell. Base metals — particularly copper, brass, and nickel alloys — have a characteristic metallic odour that becomes noticeable when the metal warms against the skin or is rubbed briskly.
Rub the piece firmly between your palms for ten to fifteen seconds, then smell it. If you notice a strong, distinctive metallic odour, the piece likely contains significant quantities of base metal. Genuine sterling silver may have a very faint smell, but it should not be pronounced or unpleasant.
This test is not definitive on its own — some base metal alloys are more odorous than others — but used alongside other tests, it adds another data point to your assessment.
Warning Signs When Buying
Beyond the physical tests, certain situations and selling behaviours should prompt extra caution.
Prices that seem too good to be true almost always are. The raw material cost of genuine 925 sterling silver sets a floor below which a legitimately hallmarked piece cannot reasonably be priced. If someone is selling silver jewellery at prices that seem implausibly low, ask yourself how that is possible.
Sellers who cannot or will not provide the BIS hallmark details or HUID number for their pieces are worth approaching with scepticism. A legitimate seller working with genuine hallmarked silver has nothing to hide and every reason to be transparent.
Online purchases of silver jewellery require extra vigilance because you cannot physically examine the piece before buying. Look for sellers who display BIS hallmark certification clearly, provide HUID numbers in their product listings, and have verifiable return policies that protect you if the piece turns out not to be what was described.
What to Do If You Suspect a Piece Is Fake
If you have purchased a piece that you now suspect may not be genuine silver, the most reliable next step is to take it to a reputable jeweller or an assaying centre for professional testing.
Professional testing uses methods such as X-ray fluorescence analysis, which can determine the exact metal composition of a piece without causing any damage. This gives you a definitive answer rather than a probable one.
If the piece was recently purchased and found to be misrepresented, you have consumer protection rights under Indian law. The Consumer Protection Act provides recourse for buyers who have been sold goods that do not match their described specifications.
Buying With Confidence
The goal of knowing how to spot fake silver is not to approach every purchase with suspicion. Most sellers are honest, most hallmarked silver is genuine, and most buying experiences are straightforward.
The goal is simply to be an informed buyer — to know what to look for, to ask the right questions, and to have the tools to verify what you are told. That knowledge protects you without making the experience of buying jewellery feel like an interrogation.
At House of Argent, every piece we sell carries BIS hallmarking as a standard. We believe that the people who wear our silver deserve complete confidence in what they are wearing — not just in how it looks, but in what it actually is.

“An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” — Benjamin FranklinNobody buys jewellery expecting to be deceived. You walk into a shop, or browse through an online store, or…

[1

post-184","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized","entry

How to Spot Fake Silver Jewellery: A Practical Guide Every Buyer in India Needs to Read - Shreyansh Jain

<meta name="description" content="Learn how to identify fake silver jewellery before you buy.
